I Hired a Housecleaner!

I'm sure my mom would have rolled her eyes at me, if she was alive, to hear I hired someone to come help clean my house.  I don't care.  I have no pride when it comes to asking for help. I think it's money well-spent and I should do it more often; hire someone that is.  I hate housework. The thought of being a full-time housewife makes me shudder. There is hardly anything domestic about me except that I live in a house. I hear other women, when asked what they did last weekend, say "oh, I went to the movies and did housework".  Really?  I don't get it.

Listen, my house is not filthy.  You need to know this. It's dusty, and sometimes the dishes pile up. As a matter of fact, there is a big pile in the sink right this minute from the fury of cooking from yesterday afternoon. We cooked curried fried rice and a double batch of Speedy Oatmeal Cookies before we ran off to the Gratitude Banquet last night. We stayed after dinner and helped clean up the church hall, which got us home about 11:30.  I actually know people who would have had to wash the dishes before they could get a good night's sleep.  We're not those kind of people. I did not inherit that gene.  Neither did Gene, apparently.

I bought an iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner about this time last year.  I love "her".  Her name is "Ruthie".  I have a  friend who recently bought a Roomba after I had been selling the virtues of it to her.  I saw her yesterday and asked her how she liked it. Her eyes actually lit up when she started talking about her Roomba.  "I totally get it", I told her.  If I had to give up everything in my house, "Ruthie" would be the last to go. With two animals shedding hair and dander, I don't know how I lived without the Roomba.

I'd love to have a full-time housekeeper but that's not going to happen.  In the meantime, I'll treat my friend very well today, who is taking time out of her Sunday to come help me tidy up my place before the kids get her. Shari is my hero today.

Just so you know, I'm not going to ask her to clean my bathrooms.  Ick.  I'll do my own bathrooms. And my bedroom is off limits too. Okay, well, those dishes in the sink are calling me.  "Suuuuuusssssaaaaannnn".  I hate it when they start talking.

  1. OK I officially do not get it. You hate housekeeping, you can hire a housekeeper, buy a robot vacuum cleaner but you refuse to use the dishwasher already installed in your kitchen????? In what universe does that make sense??

  2. I would buy 3 sets of dishes etc and fill it to the brim then wash once a week. That makes sense to me. I have a neice that does that. It works for her. You can shop for them at the thrift stores and would be a great project for Gene to look for them. Just an idea. And glad you got help today. You earned it.

  3. Oh Nancy, that's a great idea! I like it except I can't do it with the ants in our area. @Kathy, there are a couple of reasons I don't use the dishwasher. Mine takes forever to run a cycle. When I do the dishes by hand, they're done instantly (approx. 7 minutes start to finish). However, I will be using the DW when the kids comes this week. I refuse to run it unless it's full & we just don't use enough dishes to run it every day so then I've got dirty dishes sitting in the dishwasher. We have ants in the summertime and they find their way to the dishwasher. Ick. Yeah, I would love to have that space for storage vs. the dishwasher but it would not be a great selling point for the next buyer of this place.

    P.S. Shari came today & I have very clean wood blinds now and she cleaned all my baseboards and wiped down my fridge & the hanging light over the table. She rocks!

  4. Ants......Ants how I hate them in the house and RV. We had to put out the special ant stuff we got. It really keeps them away. Will have to check to see what it is and let you know.

  5. We just have the little sugar ants.. not the red ones like in Yuma, but almost microscopic black ones. I nuked the yard, and hit the walls on the outside and had so much toxic stuff outside that birds flying over were crashing to the ground dead... okay not really, but you get the picture, and we didn't have more then about 3 ants that day, but within 3 days we were back with about the same level as before.. WINTER WEATHER.. that is the cure. We will most likely have less mosquitoes and lots of other vermin next year if this cold weather hangs... so there is the bright side to this sometimes at 0 and below weather.. less pesky insects to deal with next spring and summer. {hopefully}

You Made My Day, Dude!

A couple weeks ago while I was driving back to Portland after spending the night on the Oregon coast, we came up on some road construction ...
