A River Runs Through It

I had lunch with a friend yesterday. She's a fellow blogger who is just getting started putting those things that roll around in her mind down onto the keyboard. I mentioned that I felt like I have run out of things to write about. My statement about myself really bugged me all afternoon. If my friend reads this, I know she'll totally get it. We are kindred spirits in many ways.

So I went back into my photos and found this pic from May 2009, our first summer here. I think I shot this on our first long motorcycle ride to Bickleton. We were heading home and stopped to stretch our legs.

The funny thing about the photos I take is that I have this amazing memory for all the "conditions" surrounding it. This particular day was warm and breezy. I remember looking down the gorge at the Columbia River and thinking, "Now, THIS is a river!!!"  Having moved here from Yuma, Arizona, where the not-so-mighty Colorado River trickles through town and should really be called a creek, I was glad to get to see the enormousness of this place. We actually have three rivers running through the Tri-Cities. The Yakima and Snake rivers are just as beautiful.

I love the Tri-Cities. Winters here are mild and can get kind of long but next week is April and I survived.

What do you love about where you live?  Do tell.

love, susan

  1. I love so many things, the beauty that surrounds me, the "culture" of Juneau where people are so authentic and unpretentious, the splendor of all the green, how much a warm, sunny day is appreciated, the glorious sunrises down the windy Gastineau Channel, I love seeing my home through the eyes of the thousands of visitors we get each day and I love the solitude one can experience on any of the numerous trails. I love that we share this space with so many wild animals, both land and sea and I love the type of adventuresome spirits that are attracted to living here. I love the grandure as well as the mundane, the complexities as well as the simplicities. I love Juneau!

  2. Ooh, this is a good one Susan. Hope I can do it justice, but Katy offers everything but mountains. In 10 minutes I can go country or upscale city in 20. I have peace and solitude when I want it, and people when I feel like it. We're not that far from Galveston, so the beach is doable. The weather goes from one extreme to another but the winters are weak, which is a minus if you like cold. Summers are forgotten in January. Spring explodes and you forget what you missed out on during the winter. I get to commune with cows and horses or people, as the need arises. I guess we're pretty happy here since we've stayed put longer than we have any place else.

Wow. Katy gives me what I need. Thanks for reminding me of that. Lovely post.

  3. I did read... and was thinking that you can write about so many experiences. You have been many places (emotionally and physically). Your memory has not failed you. You have many options, big and small. I mean, I wrote about a fart.

    1. You, my friend, make me laugh! And you make it okay for me to be myself (whoever that is?)! You'll never know how much that means to me.

  4. When I first started my blog I though I had nothing to say either, now 3 blogs later I have too much to say some days hahahaha. You have a great memory (sometimes LOL if no one reads your 365 blog).

  5. I love the river. How I miss water. Most my vacations include water. Ocean beaches, Lakes, Rivers but think water is in most my plans. How did I manage to live in Yuma so long in a litter box? Now with a home back in the northwest and the river within 10 minutes and a boat so I can spend hours and hours on the water, if only I could include more sunshine would my ideal place appear.

  6. I love everything about Fairbanks... well except for the really slushy roads as we fight our way out of another winter. But knowing there will be green and color, and dirt, and yard work, and grass to be mowed is so exciting. I love this time of year when everything wakes up.

You Made My Day, Dude!

A couple weeks ago while I was driving back to Portland after spending the night on the Oregon coast, we came up on some road construction ...
