Mirror in the Sky

"Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?"
      ~ Stevie Nicks

I happened to turn on the Oprah yesterday and it was a rerun of her final season with her guests being several rock divas.  Stevie Nicks is among my all-time favorite female artists and I do so love her "Landslide".

I woke up with the feeling of an impending season change. Fall is not far around the corner. I love fall but I'm not a big fan of winter. I'm just not going to think about it today.  The season changing is not all about the weather. Every day I wake up and this is a day I haven't experienced yet.

You see, I'm an "ex" future tripper. I've had to work at it but I am all about living in today. I was looking at my calendar on the fridge and I have a lot of events coming up. Being away from work (the paid kind) the last three months has made me realize that even though I'm not getting up and going someplace in exchange for money doesn't mean that I'm not doing worthwhile things. In the last three months, I don't believe I've wasted one single day doing something I didn't want to do. I am so happy to say that.

love, susan

  1. Hi SuddenlySusan,
I have been away from paid work for 10 months now and although I feel that I contribute to society and do worthwhile things everyday I still can't get it out of my mind that I am not living up to my full potential. Mind you I felt that way when I was in paid work so it is not a new situation for me. Something is stopping me from making more of myself but at the same time I feel like a very worthwhile human being. Oh well, maybe one day I will decide what I want to be when I grow up but for now I will just keep helping others clear the clutter from their lives.

  3. If you could put that in a bottle Susan, and pass it along to everyone who needed a dose, why, you'd be something else. :) Sometimes Life gives us respites so we can do just what you are doing. Not everyone gets it. I look at the down times as time outs from God. I imagine him saying, "Okay daughter, you done a lot, now it is time for the next lap."

I believe Americans fret more over free time than any other group of people. Have you caught Colin Quinn's act on HBO (I think). He makes us laugh at our American restlessness.

    Thanks for some nice introspection.

  4. Thank you for the thoughtful comments. My life hasn't always felt so positive ~ I've been through some tribulations but it was so worth it to get to this place where I am now.

@ Colleen ~ you really do help others with your blog!
@ Marina ~ just be the best "you" that you can be!
@ Limner ~ I only get basic cable so I don't have HBO but I know that other countries do a much better job of awarding their workers vacation time and taking that time seriously.

  5. I soooo need to learn to live in the moment more. It's something I am working on. Tonight as I prepared supper, I felt just a glimmer of joy and stopped to marvel about it for a moment, then went right back to thinking, "Okay, now I need to do this, that, and the other thing." I let busyness get in my way far too often.

Thanks for your post, and your blog. I appreciate your insights and reminders to savor the moments.

You Made My Day, Dude!

A couple weeks ago while I was driving back to Portland after spending the night on the Oregon coast, we came up on some road construction ...
